Hi Zik,
You might want to check out what we are doing at TOS. Here is a link - http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/TOSS09 - to our last summit. I think some of those things you mentioned came up during the summit. Interestingly, we have some Free Software and Open Source Software (FSOSS) organizations, such as Mozilla and Red Hat, showing interest.

Regards,
Michael.

Hello,

Very interesting talk. Talking about FOSS and the academia in Africa, I feel it will also go a long way if Software coys on the continent could also participate in OSS projects especially in terms of support/funding.

Also institutions of learning should encourage students who engage in software development to make their programs/projects open source. This will not only open such projects to various applications within the software industry but also encourage the developer (and other aspiring developers) to develop the project/product further, providing other opportunities.

Just as one of the conclusions noted, participation in FOSS initiatives is based on personal interest, how can such interest develop if their is no motivation in terms of support and/or encouragement on the part of those already involved?

God bless Africa.

Great comparison, Mic.

Just a quicky - the Google Wave link is broken, guess it should be wave.google.com (not .org)

I got a comment from my former supervisor that he could not understand the difference between the second use case scenario and a save-session feature, such as Restore Session in Mozilla Firefox, commonly found in web browsers. I would like to state the difference here.

My second scenario refers to the ability to move a stateful HTTP connection - email session, online bank access - between two PCs without logging in again. Concerned about the security? I made some recommendations in my thesis.

In a nutshell, while the first scenario addresses problem encountered by two Internet Users, who want to interact, the second scenario addresses problem encountered by only one person, which is called session handoff between two PCs.

Considering his valuable comment, I was thinking that I should rephrase the second use case scenario to this: "Alice, researching on her project and using one of the PCs in a library , is asked to fill in..........She realizes that she would have to restart the whole processes on her PC when she reaches home......" I hope that I would be able to make these changes before my final submission of the thesis.
