First Day @ TOSS & FSOSS, Toronto

The first day of the Teaching Open Source Summit (TOSS) was great. I tried catching up with what other folks at the Free Software and Open Source (FSOSS) symposium were doing, but it was not what I thought it would be. Really, I had earlier thought I would be able to do both.  But I missed out on a couple of interesting workshops at the FSOSS.  However, TOSS was awesome. I met with great people – Greg from Red Hat, Frank from Mozilla, Karlie from Webpath, Mel, Dave, Fardad and Chris from Seneca, to mention a few.

There were a lot discussions on what has been happening in teaching open source around the globe. In addition, how Mozilla and Red Hat, as Open Source Software Companies, have been promoting Open Source Education was also discussed. At the end, we came up with a list of what we would like to have in TOS.

The Needs in TeachingOpenSource

The Needs in TeachingOpenSource

No doubt, it was a great experience. For once, I could see the difference between a College/Polytechnic/Univ. of Technology and the conventional academia. And now, I am asking myself some questions – Where do I belong?, Where do I want to be?, Can I find a linkage between the two? I will be brainstorming on these questions in the next few days or weeks. For now,  I look forward to another great day today – FSOSS Presentations.

Vodacom S.A. hits back at Third-Party PCMCIA Cards

In the past three months, I have struggled to connect to the Internet on my laptop via a modem. Things suddenly stopped working. I lost 850MB data bundle in the process. Yes! I have always bought 1GB of data bundle monthly. What happened was that my famous PCMCIA card from Cingular, which I had been using close to two years,  stopped working. The error, when I had Vodacom sim card in it, was “modem hanged up” on Linux (Ubuntu) and an error 619 in Windows XP. After troubleshooting, I realized that Vodacom had stopped third party modems or PCMCIA cards from being used with its card. YES!! I found out that the modem could work with an MTN card, though pretty slow that I couldn’t make VOIP calls
I ended up getting the Vodafone modem (a product from Huawei Technologies), which seamlessly works with a Vodacom card to date. Below are some links to help you get your Vodacom dongle work on Ubuntu.

To be a biz man

A client called me yesterday that the cheque had matured and asked for my account details. Thereafter, he mentioned how much he would be transferring to my account. I couldn’t agree on the said amount immediately but said I would get back to him with the account details.
I re-examined the proposal and found out that more could be done to what he proposed to give. As a freelancer, also having another techie as a member of the team who wanted to play the major role but lacked pleasing personality, i had to settle mine alone.
He wouldn’t shift ground after all plead, persuasion and reconsideration. Then I gave up and we ended the conversation in a good mood (both of us pretending no doubt).
Well, it was not the first time when it comes to projects like that, I have learnt to accept things like that and live on.
Also, a resounding lesson is to be able to maintain a position at commencement of any contract and stand by it.

A true biz man never shifts his ground or eats his words. Right???
